Enbridge Inc. is pushing deeper into natural gas shipping and distribution with its CAD$37-billion acquisition of Spectra Energy Corp.
Houston-based Spectra’s pipeline, storage and processing operations extend from gas fields in northern British Columbia through the U.S. Midwest and to the Gulf of Mexico.
It also owns the Union Gas Ltd. distribution network, Canada’s second-largest utility, with $7-billion in assets located in Southern Ontario
Spectra holds a majority stake in the Maritimes & Northeast pipeline, a small part of a sprawling system that transports gas throughout the U.S. northeast and south along the Atlantic seaboard.
The network includes the 14,600-kilometre Texas Eastern Transmission system connecting production in that state and from the Gulf Coast with markets in the northeast. It has a peak capacity of nearly 10.5 billion cubic feet a day.
The company also operates the 280,000 barrel-a-day Express oil pipeline from Hardisty, Alta., to Wood River, Ill.

B.C. Pipeline System: It runs 2,800 km south from Fort Nelson, B.C. to the Canada-U.S. border, with capacity of 2.9 billion cubic feet a day.
Algonquin Gas Transmission: It spans about 1,800 km and transports up to 2.74 billion cubic feet a day through New England, New York and New Jersey.
East Tennessee Natural Gas: This pipeline system extends about 2,400 km through Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina, with a peak capacity of 1.86 billion cubic feet a day.
