Annual Global Cleantech 100 List Recognizes the Top Private Companies
in Clean Technology
Joule,
the pioneer of liquid fuels from recycled CO2, today
announced it was named to the prestigious 2015
Global Cleantech 100 produced by Cleantech
Group, whose mission is to connect corporates to sustainable
innovation through its i3
Connect platform and global events.
The Global Cleantech 100 represents the most innovative and promising
ideas in clean technology. Featuring companies that are best positioned
to solve tomorrow’s cleantech challenges, the Global Cleantech 100 is a
comprehensive list of private companies with the highest potential to
make the most significant market impact.
Joule has developed groundbreaking pathways for large scale fuel
production directly or indirectly from any CO2 stream. In
2015, Joule produced fuels from its groundbreaking Helioculture™
technology at ever increasing productivity levels at the end-to-end
demonstration facility in Hobbs, New Mexico, and achieved
record-breaking productivity levels for both ethanol and diesel products
in its lab facilities in Bedford, Mass. Additionally, Joule acquired Red
Rock Biofuels in a deal
that finalized in early 2016 to accelerate the commercialization of
ultra-low carbon fuels, adding a near-term commercial capability to
produce drop-in, renewable diesel and jet fuel.
“It is a great honor and validation of Joule’s ultra-low carbon fuel
technologies to be recognized in the Global Cleantech 100 among other
innovative cleantech companies,” said Brian Baynes, CEO of Joule. “As
record-breaking global temperatures in 2015 show that the world urgently
needs to increase its focus on mitigating climate change, the Joule team
remains focused on commercializing low-carbon fuels to ensure security
of sustainable fuel supply and to help decarbonize the transportation
sector globally.”
The Global Cleantech 100 list is collated by combining proprietary
Cleantech Group research data with weighted qualitative judgments of
hundreds of nominations, and specific inputs from a global 100-person
expert panel. To qualify for the list, companies must be independent,
for-profit, cleantech companies that are not listed on any major stock
exchange.
This year, a record number of nominations were received: 6,900 distinct
companies from 60 countries. These companies were weighted and scored to
create a short list of 323 companies. Short-listed nominees were
reviewed by Cleantech Group’s Expert Panel, resulting in a finalized
list of 100 companies from 17 countries.
The 100-member expert panel was drawn equally from leading financial
investors and representatives of multi-national corporations and
industrials active in technology and innovation scouting across Asia,
Europe, and North America. The composition of the expert panel broadly
represents the global cleantech community, from pioneers and leaders to
veterans and new entrants. The diversity of panelists results in a list
of companies that command an expansive base of respect and support from
many important players within the global cleantech innovation ecosystem.
“The Global Cleantech 100 provides us with insight into the collective
opinion of key market players on which megatrends and innovation
companies are most likely to have a significant impact in the next 5-10
years,” said Michele Parad, senior manager at Cleantech Group and lead
author of the Global Cleantech 100 Report. “Now in its seventh year, the
Global Cleantech 100 program reveals which themes are staying relevant
and which sectors are taking center stage.”

About Joule
Joule develops technology platforms for the
production of sustainable, drop in, low carbon transportation fuels. The
company pioneered a direct CO2-to-fuel production platform,
effectively reversing combustion through the use of solar energy. This
platform applies engineered catalysts to continuously convert waste CO2
directly into renewable fuels such as ethanol or hydrocarbons for
diesel, jet fuel, and gasoline. Flexible to utilize a variety of
feedstocks, geographies, and climates, Joule’s processes enable
unrivaled scalability and volume at optimal cost. Joule is privately
held and has raised over $200 million in funding to date, led by
Flagship Ventures. The company operates from Bedford, Massachusetts and
The Hague, The Netherlands with production operations in Hobbs, New
Mexico.
