DTE Energy's 'Care Force' volunteers kick off August as Month of Caring

More than 1,000 of DTE Energy employees to volunteer throughout the company's service territories during August

DETROIT, Aug. 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- When it comes to giving back to the communities where we live and serve, DTE Energy (NYSE: DTE) is a force to be reckoned with. In August, the company is rallying more than 1,000 employees across the state to volunteer their time and energy as part of the DTE Care Force, for its first annual "Month of Caring."

DTE Energy employees kicked-off their Month of Caring activities cleaning up the grounds of a local church.

Since 2010, the company has sponsored enterprise-wide volunteer events, including "DTE Cares Day," and "DTE Cares Fridays." This year, DTE has expanded its initiative to an entire month to more positively impact the community through volunteering and fundraising. From Muskegon to Monroe to Pontiac and areas in between, the DTE Care Force is assembling employees, to team up and give back to the causes they care about – in their own, unique way.

"Volunteerism matters. It strengthens the connections to our communities. Most importantly, it helps our communities and nonprofit partners make a meaningful difference in people's lives," said Mark Stiers, president and COO, DTE Gas. "DTE is encouraging our employees to volunteer because as a good corporate citizen, we recognize it is our responsibility to give back to the communities where we live and serve."

Throughout the month, employees will be donating between four and eight hours of their time to community service activities, including: neighborhood clean-up and beautification; food packing and serving; recycling and environmental support, home building, restoration and furnishing services; as well as services to support children, including collecting school supplies and packing backpacks, preparing materials and developing craft projects for after-school programs.

While the volunteer events will be ongoing and scheduled throughout August, three events scheduled for the month include:

  • August 8-10 – a dozen volunteers will join Summer in the City volunteers to paint a mural on a DTE Energy substation wall in Detroit.
  • August 18 - more than 25 volunteers will prepare 1,000 brown bag meals for underprivileged children in Grand Rapids during the summer months.
  • August 26 – nearly 200 employees will spread out across 12 sites in the Detroit area to clean up vacant lots, fill schoolchildren's backpacks, distribute food, and plant and weed gardens.

DTE Energy continues to build on its long and proud history of giving back. Every year, DTE volunteers work with more than 200 nonprofits in 450 communities in Michigan. This includes its signature partnerships with nonprofits, such as the Holiday Meals on Wheels program. Last year, the company had 700 employees pack, serve and deliver 18,000 meals throughout Michigan during the month of December.
