President Donald Trump plans to get a first-hand look at the soon-to-be-opened Cameron LNG export terminal just a couple hours east of Houston.
The president plans to visit the Hackberry, Louisiana liquefied natural gas facility on Tuesday where he is expected to give remarks about how the industry is creating jobs and boosting U.S. exports.
Developed by San Diego utility company Sempra Energy, the first of three production units at the $10 billion export terminal was completed last month. The remaining two production units remain under construction but the president will get a first-hand look at Train 1, which is expected to begin exports soon.
“Over 11,000 workers contributed to the construction of this premier energy infrastructure project which will enable the export of abundant and clean natural gas to global markets, bringing resilience and energy security to millions,” Sempra Energy officials said in a statement.
Once all three production units are complete, Cameron LNG will be able to make nearly 12 million metric tons of LNG per year. Those production figures translate roughly to about 1.7 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day or enough energy to power 8.5 million U.S. homes in a single day.
Trump’s visit to Louisiana comes less than two weeks after the U.S. Department of Energy gave Sempra Energy’s proposed Port Arthur LNG export terminal in southeast Texas approval to sell LNG to countries that do not have a free-trade agreement with the United States.
The presidential visit also comes less than a month after Trump visited the Houston area to sign two executive orders to remove regulations and other barriers to the energy industry.
